Week 9

 What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa
and pedagogy?

Overall in the last 8-9 weeks I feel I have increased my understanding of the

Manaiakalani kaupapa in many ways.

The Learn Create Share pedagogy along with making learning accessible anywhere at anytime for tamariki is essential.

The Learn/Create/Share pedagogy moves us towards visible and ubiquitous learning, strong learner agency and

connectedness..

 

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a

professional?

A range of tools to have in my toolkit for digital learning. This DFI cohort has given me a chance to

reflect upon what I know and also extended me in my knowledge.

Throughout these last 9 weeks I have been able to increase my confidence in learning tools

and implement them in my classroom, which has also challenged my student in their digital learning.

 Within the last 9 weeks I have been able to try new learning apps, had support from DFI tutors and extended my knowledge around digital learning.

Today I sat my Level 1 google exam and happy to say I feel more confident within my teaching and learning of digital technologies. Ready for the rest of the 2021 learning year and challenging these tamariki with their learning also.

DAY 7- DEVICES

 DFI Ubiquitous

DFI ubiquitous means that students, whanau, family and schools (anyone) has access at any place at any one time to learning, This is important for whanau to have connections and support their tamariki in their learning.

Students are able to rewind their learning from school and share/ complete/ continue any mahi at home/ or anywhere that is not their classroom learning space.   

This links to the digital curriculum within New Zealand, and teaching our Tamariki how to be safe online. This is an important tool that must sit behind the learning anywhere anytime motto. Students need to know how to be safe online when they are out of school, understanding what to do if something goes wrong, and who to tell if this happens. This allows Tamariki to be connected, empowered, connected, creative and making learning visible. 

My classroom site is an example of how I make learning accessible to my Tamariki and whanau within my classroom.

Shortcuts on chromebooks is a great way to save time and frustration when working. Here is a slide I worked on today about shortcuts, I didn't manage to get it all done but I did learn a few shortcuts that will be good to know to teach my learners who use chromebooks each day in the classroom.

Explain everything is an app students are able to use to help them explore any device they use. This app makes learners once again accessible to any learning tasks.  In today's session we got to explore this tool as if we were a learner, this was great to see the learning that can be done by any student, limiting any barriers. 

The afternoon session I spent creating my own Hapara dashboard workspaces, this was successful as I was able to create things I will use within my classroom programme.  

DAY 6- DFI Enabling Access

ENABLING ACCESS

 For the Manaiakalani pedagogy aspect of this week, it was to be about 'Enabling Access' and being 'Connected'. Similar to week 5, connecting students, whanau and schools within learning. Making learning visible and accessible for all.  

This week we spent a large amount of the session on google sites.  It was useful to view educational sites that have been produced by teachers with different levels of digital experience. Also to receive feedback on my class site by those same people. No matter how experienced you are there is always something you can add and adjust to make your site more engaging and captivating for learners. A chance to also reflect upon our own blogs and make a few goals to achieve today was important, for me I realised I didn't have a button for my cybersmart section or a link to other classes sites from my team. 

I set myself the goal of tidying my class site home page, which was done by creating a new button to have on my homepage to connect our cybersmart page, to link two other classroom sites from my team onto the site and also to check all fonts are readable and engaging for learners.

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

The framework of the house, all must be taken seriously for success for diversity across education facilities. Ako, Hanga and Tohatoha- Learn, Create, Share.

Changes not only in education but for educators- increasing teacher effectiveness and accelerating learning outcomes.

We know that Learn Create Share is about the pedagogy not the technology, but it is always good to have that reminder.

Learn Create Share can also be used in all curriculum areas and doesn't necessary involve the use of digital technology. Using this pedagogy across all curriculum areas helps to engage learners as they are able to see and connect with each others learning.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Google Keep:

Google keep can be used for both personal and educational purposes. Recording voice memos, notes as reminders or using this tool in the classroom for education. Taking photos, selecting text and adding to google doc to be shared with students.

Google Meet:

I learnt that adding a location is always helpful, especially when using your own personal google calendar to share with family and friends. Google meet is also great to add a reminder to your event for the day or week before if you are creating an event for later in the year. A reminder is always helpful.

Taming your tabs:

Star icon when creating a bookmarks, this is something I encourage within my classroom and saving passwords for those sites for students to have easy access when doing their classroom mahi.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?  

Taming your tabs:

I do need to encourage students to create folders for their bookmarked sites, making less clutter across their task bar as some students struggle to find bookmarks if they are not on taskbar but under the arrows on right of screen.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Google Meet:

Would be a great way to have students record this discussions around stories they have read during the week to show their comprehension of stories that they have been reading. They can them embed this onto their blogs for other tamariki or whanau to see.

You will see with this video from a google meet with Adriana we discussed a blog post about Anzac day that a year 6 boy did. It had multiple aspects and multiple comments that he also replied to, this we thought made a quality blog post for a student of his age. I had shared the link with Adriana in the google meet invite, next time I will present the tab, but as there was only 2 of off we could see the blog post using the link I shared before the meet started.

What is Maniakalani and why is a great opportunity for all Kura within Aotearoa?

Maniakalani has been helping educators and tamariki engage in learning for over a decade. Engaging learning by using Learn, Create, Share pedagogy with the use of 21st century learning tools (digital). 

Equity, Achievement, Hope, 21st Century skills are some of the reasons why Manaiakalani have been supporting educators for over a decade. Students are able to have authentic learning experiences whilst having their own personal voice to engage all in teaching and learning. 

After 4 years of Maniakalani being developed, whanau become engaged and a home school learning partnership regarding learning devices was established. 

 What did I learn... 

Information from today encourages my thinking for what I have been doing within my classroom, giving students ownership of their learning and making learning achievable for all learners. However, a excellent reminder is that I must have clear expectations of google docs/ files and folders, making sure these are all named correctly to make a consistent message across the teaching staff. Making it easier for when students transition from class to class each year. Similar to when setting out workbooks each year. 

In our bubble we also had a quick chat about how we can block visibility of slides so tamariki cannot access their work for the following week too early. I like making it available on Sundays so students are able to see and be prepared for their week of learning ahead. 

What did I learn that I can teach my students...

I need to encourage students to now use their initials when they create any new doc/ drawing or slides. This is a great way for students and teachers across multiple learning areas monitoring who is working on what task and also what they are working on, or what they need to finish. 

I really love the idea of eyes on text reading mileage task, this is a great way of using speech to text, where in the past I have only used this for writing. 

What did I create?

I used google Doc to create a task for my low level learners. This was a task that this day 1 had given us in a simple form, I have adjusted it using a table and added more of a specific layout that matches most of my planning. The one thing I didn't like about doing this in google Doc for my colour wheel readers is that I was unable to add a mote to this, which I do use in other planning so students can listen to the instructions, taking away any barriers for their reading.
